The Denver Green Roof Initiative was passed on November 7th, 2017 in an effort to curb Denver’s “heat island” effect from heat radiating roofs. According to climate central.org the effects of Denver’s heat island are staggering and only increasing with continued development. Denver is currently the Number 3 city with the most effects from the current heat island. The following statistics are alarming and on the rise.
Effects of Denver’s Heat Island.
Up to 23 Degrees hotter in the city vs rural areas.
Average of 4.9 Degrees hotter everyday during the summer in the city vs rural areas.
Over 26 ore days above 90 Degrees each year.
These statistics caused the public to make changes. According to the Denver Post “54 percent of city voters approved the nation’s most stringent and far-reaching mandate for rooftop gardens."
Section 10-301 A of the ordinance states, “Every building with a gross floor area of 25,000 Square feet or greater or a building addition that causes the building to become 25,000 square feet or greater constructed after January 1, 2018, shall include a green roof with a coverage of available roof space…”
Basically, the initiative states that developers of new large buildings and the owners of existing buildings in need of new roofs would be required to install a roof garden or a solar panel system on all projects after January 1, 2018. The initiative continues to develop to include additional options, but the main requirements remain the same.
The best resolution to this new requirement is simple: A Solar Panel System is the only solution that will add value to the building and will save money in utility costs.
